
Kevin Blackwell and his wife Kathi founded the Surf City Squeeze juice bar concept. An accomplished triathlete and entrepreneur, Mr. Blackwell saw great potential and profits in offering consumers nutritious fruit smoothies and energizing sports drinks.


Surf City Squeeze sold its first International Development Agreement in Canada and a second agreement was also sold covering seven countries in the Middle East.
The Holding Company, "Sports Group International, Inc." merged with Surf City Squeeze, with Surf City Squeeze's management taking over full control of the company. Surf City Squeeze then began operating as a subsidiary of Sports Group International, Inc.
Also in 1999, Sports Group International, Inc. purchased the Frullati Café & Bakery chain, giving the company its second restaurant concept and bringing the total number of its franchised locations to 200.
Mr. Blackwell officially changed the name of his company from "Sports Group International, Inc." to "Kahala Corp." If you are wondering where "Kahala" originated, it is actually the name of a beautiful beach in Hawaii - one of Blackwell's favorite places to surf, relax and rejuvenate.
Also in 2000, Kahala Corp developed the Rollerz brand, bringing the number of its total quick-service restaurant concepts up to three. In addition, Surf City Squeeze sold its first Area Development Agreement for Southern California.
Kahala Corp sold multiple development agreements across the United States for its three restaurant brands. During this year, Kahala's growth really picked up speed as overall restaurant counts increased to 250!
Kahala Corp purchased the Ranch 1 Grilled Chicken concept, bringing its number of restaurant concepts up to four with over 300 locations.

Kahala Corp purchased the Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill concept - it's fifth restaurant concept bringing total unit count to over 350 locations. This acquisition gave Kahala Corp. a major presence in the Phoenix, Arizona marketplace with over 30 Samurai Sam's in the Phoenix metro area.
Kahala also purchased the TacoTime chain - its sixth restaurant concept boosting unit count to over 650 locations worldwide! This acquisition diversified Kahala Corp's real estate as the majority of TacoTime locations are on pad sites as opposed to shopping malls, strip centers, and health clubs.
In 2003, Kahala hosted its first convention for all six of its brands in Las Vegas, Nevada. More than 400 franchisees attended the educational and fun-filled 3-day event at the Mandalay Bay Resort. At the convention, Kahala Corp launched its first co-branding initiatives.

Kahala Corp purchased the Great Steak & Potato chain - giving the company its seventh restaurant concept. Overall unit count reaches over 1,000 locations.
Co-branding Kahala's concepts became incredibly popular with current and new franchisees. The first TacoTime/Samurai Sam's/Surf City Squeeze tri-brand opens in Lincoln City, Oregon.
Kahala Corp acquired the license to "Wafflo" giving the company its eighth restaurant concept and adding dozens more locations to its portfolio.
Also in 2004, all Kahala offices were consolidated into the Scottsdale, Arizona corporate headquarters - with Kahala now leasing over 16,000 square feet of office space.
Kahala continued its success selling multiple area development agreements all over the United States and even in South Korea.


Kahala Corp rolls out extensive brand revitalization initiatives for Frullati Café & Bakery, Samurai Sam's Teriyaki Grill, and Surf City Squeeze. Key elements of each initiative included new logos and signage, menu revitalization and menu boards, and facilities décor.
Kahala Corp signed a Master Development Agreement with over 50 Pacific Rim countries with Signature Brands, Ltd. for Kahala's eight food concepts. Kahala also took a 40% ownership position in Signature Brands, Ltd., which is managed by former executives of Virgin Atlantic.
Overall systemwide sales are estimated at over $450 million and over 6,000 persons are estimated to be employed by Kahala Corp and the third-party franchisees of its eight restaurant concepts.

Kahala Corp acquired Johnnie's NY Pizzeria, a fast casual pizza and pasta chain based in Los Angeles, California.
Kahala Corp acquired Blimpie, the tenth brand now franchised by Kahala Corp, bringing the total store count close to 3,000 units. An agreement with the retail giant, Wal-Mart, calls for Blimpie and other Kahala brands to be built within Wal-Mart super stores throughout the country.
Kahala Corp opened its first 'concept cluster' in City National Bank Building in downtown Los Angeles. This location features eight of Kahala's brands all built in connection with each other with shared kitchens and rotating staff.
Kahala intensifies its focus on non-traditional real estate with locations in high-rise office buildings in Los Angeles and Chicago, an agreement for four Blimpie - Surf City Squeeze co-brand locations at the Arizona Diamondbacks Chase Field, and the ongoing relationship with Hess Express convenience stores.
